CHAPTER 1 — THREE DAYS BEFORE THE FIRESTORM

DRACO VILLAGE - NATION OF NARDOX
Something shifted in the air.
The light around Kit thinned into a straight line for a breath, like it was being pulled toward him. Aether took the form of condensed light and hovered, weightless, following the slow rise of his hand.
The villagers felt it before they understood it. Heat gathering without smoke, light forming without flame.
From the crowd someone gasped like they’d heard of this once in an old story they never believed to be more than scripture.
Ren felt the warmth on his face before Kit even looked at him.
He couldn't speak, only the sound of his breath remained. Short and hollow.
For just a heartbeat he understood.
This was power beyond mortal flame — the same light that shapes Saints and ends worlds.

Earlier that night
DRACO VILLAGE – INSIDE THE HUT
Bull-rabbit stew bubbled in the clay pot between them. The air was warm and heavy with spice. Smoke spilled out from the hut into the night sky split between two moons; one silver, one red.
Taro and Zakiah argued over who burned the last pot. Ren kept laughing at them both.
Kit smiled, but it never reached his eyes.
He sat with perfect posture, hands steady, gaze fixed on the fire like he was listening to something beneath it. The others didn’t notice.
Zakiah nudged him with a grin. “So that's all she wrote huh? The Last Saint took you in and you breathe fire now?”
Kit didn’t look up. “Something like that.”
Ren leaned back, trying to keep the mood light. “Man, come finish the season with us. Team’s hanging on, but it’s not the same without you. Or Kariah.”
Kit finally lifted his head.
The room quieted on instinct.
His thumb traced the cracked rim of his cup. Slow. Deliberate. Like the clay still held the heat from the day he and his siblings made it together under the twin suns.
“You remember where you were,” Kit said, voice steady, “the day they took her.”
No one answered.
Even the fire seemed to pull back.
“The day my little brother tried to stop them.”
Ren opened his mouth to say something.
But Kit was already standing.
The change was instant.
Zakiah’s temper flared first. “That’s not fair,” He snapped. "You think we don't blame ourselves?”
Taro tried to step in. “Zak—”
Zakiah pushed to his feet. “No. He wants to talk about it. Let's talk about it."
"Out there chasing behind his own choices while we stayed here and watched his family fall apart.”
That did it.
Kit moved and Zakiah was gone through the wall. Dust and wood splinters filled the air. The other two froze where they sat.
Ren barely had time to flinch before Kit’s hand wrapped around his throat. He didn’t squeeze, not fully. Just enough that Ren understood what this moment was.
Kit dragged him through the broken wall into the heated night of Nardox.
Out on the village road, people gathered fast, first in ones, then in dozens. Faint whispers like they were witnessing something inevitable yet tragic.
Ren hung in Kit’s grip, feet barely touching the ground. His breath came shallow, eyes wide.
Light ran along Kit’s arms, thin at first, then brighter. Aether rising through his pores like a dormant burden waking up.
Kit raised his free hand. A small orb of red-gold energy formed above it, steady, perfect, alive.
Ren saw his own reflection inside it. Saw fear. Saw memories. Saw every moment he’d shared with Kit, Kariah and the rest of Team Fire-Heart before the world turned cruel.
He tried to speak, but the sound never left his mouth.
Kit looked at him with a calm that didn’t belong to a boy his age.
“There’s a storm coming in three days,” he said. “I’ll save my fire for that.”
The orb vanished between his fingers.
Kit lowered Ren to the ground with care that didn’t match the violence that brought them here. Then he turned toward the horizon glowing faintly with dawn and walked away from everyone.
Villagers watched from a distance, unsure whether to fear him or bow.
Someone finally whispered:
“Whatever he is now… he chose himself.”

The story of that night lingered. For a season the villagers whispered his name like a prayer, then the wind carried it away.
