CHAPTER 22 — PRESSURE × TEST

THE WILDS — EXITING DEPTH 15 — LATE AFTERNOON

They began thirty strong.

Now twenty-four remained.

Four geologists, two royal guards — gone without noise or struggle.

The Wilds didn’t waste motion. It just shifted, subtle and silent, until your body remembered too late that the rules had changed.

The ground clicked—sharp, hairline, right under one of the guards boot.

“Stop.” Kyro’s hand was already up.

Twenty-four helmets stilled. The expedition line froze along a ridge of blue mineral grass — thin, translucent, reactive to light when stepped on.

Kit held his balance on the ball of his foot and didn’t finish the step.

The royal guard— Rkaze — paused too late. The grass chimed. A crack rippled across the slope, neat as a seam cutter, and the earth dropped a foot’s width into the abyss below.

“Dead band,” a geologist said into comms. “Pressure shear.”

Kyro’s voice: slightly annoyed yet stoic. “No weight shifts. Kit — off the ridge, two strides, left. Ember Step only. Don’t fall off this damned cliff.”

Kit’s heart thudded against the suit. Not a lesson — not a metaphor. Either he made the move or he and Rkaze were gone, swallowed whole.

He set his stance. Steadied his breath — heel loaded, toes light, Aether flowing in a controlled pulse. He pushed.

Ember Step.

Heat flashed beneath his first stride, orange and quick; the flame carried him through the second. The ground kissed back. He popped left, a blur, then reached across and caught Rkaze’s harness before the ridge cracked again. Another chime, another split. Rkaze’s weight came heavy and panicked. Kit balanced, centered, and dragged him to safety with two more flame-driven steps.

“Good,” Kyro said — the word carrying more relief than praise.

“Move.”

They did.

A guard team rolled a sensor drone down the fault line. It fell to nothing and never hit bottom.

The team adjusted course while a few guards joked about the close call.

“Thought he was a goner for sure.”

By the time the neon canopy of glowing leaves had lit the night, they made camp beneath star trees. The ones exploration team members had read about in stories and seen in screenplays of alternate worlds.

Rkaze’s leg trembled as he tried to set down. Kit walked over and held out a fist.

“Thanks,” Rkaze said, embarrassed, bumping knuckles.

“Don’t thank me,” Kit said. “Don’t fall.”

The line came out sounding just like his uncle.

Rkaze half-smiled. “That the official post-match speech?” — the kind of reference to the interviews Crownfall players gave after big games.

“Something like that,” Kit said. It felt good to say something without asking his heart for permission first.

Across camp, an analyst pinned a map to a board and drew three lines — one red, two black. Kyro watched the hand, not the pen.

“What’s black?” he asked.

“Low-resonance channels,” the analyst said. “We can walk them longer without… whatever that was earlier.”

“And red?”

“High pressure. No chimes. Just drop.”

Kyro nodded, rubbing the back of his neck. “Good. I’m not as fast as my nephew these days.”

A shadow shifted at the rim — human, visor faint blue. One of X’Omnera’s five. The Fist never announced themselves, but they never truly hid. Kyro didn’t look up. He let them stay a problem for another day. He’d lost enough people already and wasn't going to lose anyone else.

“Brief,” he said.

The team drew close. No speeches. Kyro pointed at the map.

“Three paths. We take the left at first light. No one touches ground without checking it with a rod. I don’t care if you gotta find a stick — check before you step. Aight? If you don’t need to talk, don’t.”

Someone muttered, barely audible. “Why are we still going down?”

“Because we said we would,” Kyro answered, walking off.

It wasn’t noble. It was reality.

He stopped by Kit, who sat working a knot out of his calf.

“Good catch,” Kyro said, offering a fist.

Kit bumped it, hiding a smile. Proud.
