SWEEPING x THE x SHADOWS

THE PULSE — BLACKOUT COLLAPSE

The elevator doors hissed open.

Cold, thin sheets of rain cut through the air like the whole district was sweating panic.

Triple Kill stepped out onto the street and the district didn’t look like the one they left.

The Pulse was dark.

Every billboard had switched to the same cobalt warning pattern pulsing across the buildings in slow, heavy beats.
Every block was flooded with blue surveillance strobes.
Every alley snapped with static as drones ripped overhead at full speed.

Hunting.

Riven’s rhythm stalled.

Talla froze mid-step — shoulders dropped low, tail rigid, eyes narrowing like she was picking a threat out of tall grass.

Set’s hand hovered near his wrapped forearm without even thinking; his ears flattened the way they did right before he bolted or fought.

Across the street, XPA officers in armored riot suits were ripping through a nightclub entrance before dragging people out, scanning them with harsh white beams coming from their emitters, shouting orders over the chaos.

Further down, a whole line of citizens were on their knees, Coil Rifles aimed over their heads while Interceptor Drones hovered inches from their backs, mapping their Aether signatures.

The air shook every time the drones passed.

Set flinched at each one.

Because they weren’t sweeping the district aimlessly, they were triangulating something specific.

Talla’s voice finally broke through, tight and small:

“Set… we need to go. Now.”

Riven grabbed Set’s jacket and pulled him back as another patrol tore past them—close enough that the drone wash rattled his ribs. He didn’t even breathe until it was gone.

Set’s pulse thrashed in his throat. He kept his arm tucked against his side like he could hide it from the sky.

The glyph burned under the bandages.

He didn’t say a word.

They pushed deeper into the streets.

The Pulse was collapsing around them—sirens, shouts, people scattering in blind panic as XPA stormed door after door. A neon sign exploded behind them from a misfired drone round. Glass rained down.

Riven shielded Talla.
Talla dragged Set.

None of them knew if this lockdown was for him—
but none of them doubted it, either.

Then he saw him again.

The Pantera bouncer from Club X’O.

Same broad frame.

Same SECURITY shirt.

But he wasn’t at the door anymore.

Two XPA officers had him pinned against an armored barricade, knees forced into the wet concrete. His hands were locked behind his back with magnetic restraints so tight his fur was pressed flat under them.

He just stayed still and looked straight ahead like he’d spent years preparing for this exact moment.

Like he always knew it would come.

One of the officers scanned him with a cobalt beam. The device chirped. Another stepped forward with an emitter disk.

Set stopped walking.

Right in the middle of the street.

Rain dripping off his jaw, breath locked in his chest.

The Pantera lifted his head. Just an inch. Enough to meet Set’s eyes across the chaos.

And offered a look that said:

Kid… keep moving.

The emitter disk slammed against the bouncer’s neck. His body stiffened once—hard—then dropped cold to the ground. The officers dragged his barely breathing body toward an armored transport without a second glance.

Talla grabbed Set’s wrist hard.

“Set—Set, don’t,” she choked.

Riven stepped in front of him, shoulders squared against Set’s chest, trying to block the view.

“Bro,” Riven whispered, shaking his head. “We keep moving.”

Set didn’t blink.

He watched the transport door slam shut. Watched the vehicle peel off with a shriek of wet tires. Watched the officers move to the next group like they hadn’t just erased a man from the street.

His tail trembled once.

Restraint.

But something inside him cracked open, something they hadn’t seen in a long time.

Resentment.

Deep, seeded, old.

The rain hit harder. Drones screamed past. Someone not far off yelled as they were tackled to the ground.

Riven leaned in close.

“We get back to the Rustline,” he said quietly. “We survive tonight. All of us. Then we figure the rest out.”

Set finally tore his eyes away from the empty road.

He nodded once.

Talla didn’t let go of his wrist. Not until they turned the corner.

Behind them, the lockdown deepened.

The rain fell.

And somewhere in the distance, the Interceptor Drones all shifted direction at once.

Like whatever they were hunting just moved.

Triple Kill didn’t look back.

They ran.
