WHEN x THE x RAIN x FALLS

⟢───── Ashes × Aether ─────⟣

NATION OF X’OMNERA — THE SPIRE DISTRICT — RAINFALL

The climb toward The Towers always felt wrong.

Triple Kill didn’t care.

They cut through the narrow backline alleys where the rain fell heavy enough to mute the Pulse behind them, swallowed under the low hum of the nation’s upper districts.

Set took the front.

Talla listened toward the shadows.

Riven kept two fingers tapping against his thigh, humming a tune as usual.

The closer they got to The Spire, the quieter the city felt. Like everything was waiting.

Set’s voice finally slipped through the rain.

“We get the Core. We get the glyph off. I owe you guys.”

Riven smirked. “Long as Otto wasn’t lying about the layout.”

“He lies,” Talla cut in. “But not about money.”

Set didn’t respond. His eyes stayed on the building shapes ahead.

The Spire’s lower rings were close now.

And that’s when the rain changed.

A shift in the sound from soft thuds to sharp angles being cut in the air.

From drops to static.

Talla’s ears snapped toward the sky.

“Wait.”

Set froze.

Riven’s rhythm stopped mid-tap.

Blue reflections crawled across the puddles around their feet.

Set lifted his head.

“Riven.”

“I see it…”

The alley behind them seemed to get narrower as the sky overhead opened.

Hundreds of cobalt lights spiraled downward in perfect formation.

Blue lenses, obsidian shells, rotating stabilizers.

Interceptor Drones.

A full swarm, closing in at strike speeds.

They dropped fast enough to rattle steel and blew the rain sideways as they filled the alley and sky.

Talla breathed out once, barely audible.

“…same ones from the boat. And the sweep.”

Set stepped backward without meaning to.

The swarm tightened into a wall.

Tiny cobalt beams traced the edges of Triple Kill’s bodies, mapping, reading, analyzing.

A single drone lowered until it hovered inches from Set’s face.

Then.

Every unit in the swarm spoke at once.

A single voice projected out at a hundred different angles.

Algorithmic. Precise. Cold.

“There are no ghosts in X’Omnera.”

“Every circuit reports.”

“Every anomaly is noted.”

Riven’s throat locked.

Talla’s tail bristled flat and low.

Set's eyes narrowed, scanning every drone for the source of the voice.

The drones rotated around them now, shifting positions until the alley became a cage.

Then the voice came again.

Closer.

“Every whisper heard before it’s spoken.”

A man walked into view at the far end of the alley.

Black stealth exosuit.

Silver data veins.

The rainfall rose from his body.

Long streaky white hair.

Half-mask with neon-blue eyes.

The calm stride of someone who could separate an ocean.

Rain.

Chief Enforcer of the Paramount Authority.

The Hand of X’Omnera.

He walked past the backline of drones, and the entire swarm adjusted as if bowing to its leader.

Set’s pulse hammered once, hard.

The Conductor.

The blackout.

The bouncer.

And now this man.

The walking blueprint of mastery. Triple Kill had heard the whispers, seen the blackout sweeps.

Rain took a step closer.

Talla’s shoulders tensed.

Riven’s jaw locked.

Set readied his stance like he could fight his way out of this.

Rain kept walking before tilting his head slightly, almost curious.

One drone drifted closer to Talla’s face and scanned her.

Another mapped Riven’s pulse.

A third mapped the faint residue of Set’s glyph under his wraps.

The pressure was suffocating.

Then Rain stopped walking.

The drones halted with him, frozen mid-air.

“In X’Omnera, we don’t lose track of people,” he said. “Only patience.”

A beat of absolute stillness.

Then, like a switch being flipped—

Every drone withdrew.

Instantly.

Hundreds of blue lights shot upward in a coordinated spiral, the rain collapsing into real gravity again as the alley emptied and sky widened.

Rain was gone.

No sound or trace of the man who just stood in the alley seconds ago.

Only rainfall.

Set waited for the drones to fully disappear into the upper fog before he breathed again.

Riven wiped rain from his face.

Talla said it first:

“…we still doing this?”

Set didn’t hesitate.

“Yeah.”

And that was it.

Just three bodies moving toward The Spire through the rain knowing the Hand of X’Omnera had just seen them, read them, and let them walk away.

For now.
