THE x WAR x FOR x THE x RAILS — PART 2

Otto’s lungs burned as he vaulted a shattered cargo crate and hit the gravel running.

The depot behind him was a storm of collapsing metal and screaming alarms.

Rain’s drones tore through the smoke like razors, dropping neutralizer shots that cracked the ground where cartel bodies had stood seconds before.

“WATCH IT!” Otto barked, snatching a younger fighter by the collar and yanking him behind cover as a cobalt beam sliced the air.

Men broke into splinter groups, sprinting toward the industrial stairways that climbed into the Towers District — the only safe direction left.

A drone swarm dove low.

Neutralizer beam fired.

Otto dashed sideways, boots sliding on wet steel.

“Clocks really ticking today…” he muttered.

He ducked under another catwalk, pressed himself against a power conduit, and ripped his comm from his belt.

Static.

Then signal.

“Gable,” he said, breath sharp and fast, “party’s headed toward you, baby. Line’s diverted. Train’s yours.”

Above him, dozens of drones veered away, forming a single hunting line toward the Towers.

Straight toward The Spire.

Straight toward Triple Kill.

NATION OF X’OMNERA — BORDERLAND RIDGE — HIGH NOON RAIL DIVERSION POINT

The world here was quiet still.

Gable stood on the edge of the slope with thirty of his best.

Every man silent.

He watched the rails.

The rest of the cartel positioned themselves along the ridge.

These weren’t the street-level bruisers.

These were the ones who’d grown up in the tunnels of Haggardii — men who could breathe metal dust and fight blind.

A faint tremor passed through the Aerth.

One boot tapped behind Gable.

“They’re coming,” the fighter whispered.

Gable lifted two fingers.

Every man held position.

The High Noon rail lit up in a long amber streak that cut through the valley. The hum deepened — heavy, rising, pulsing with engine pressure.

The cargo train rounded the bend.

Armored plating.

Solar sheathing.

Dozens of linked cars.

And on the front step of the engine stood a Conductor.

Hood drawn low.

Uniform sharp.

One hand resting on the rail, feeding invisible pulses down the entire line. Aether washed over the metal like sonar.

He listened to the track with his whole body.

Electric-amber veins throbbed beneath his sleeves.

Gable watched him closely.

This one carried power in his stillness.

The train drew closer.

Gable touched the comm bead at his collar.

“Hit it.”

A detonation cracked across the ridge.

Rock sheared from the cliffside and spilled onto the track ahead.

The train screeched, sparks spraying into the rain as the brakes fought the momentum.

The Conductor didn’t flinch.

He placed his second hand on the engine’s shell.

Pressure rippled outward in a silent wave, rolling through the rail and the hull of every car behind him.

Aether barrier.

Instant. Precise.

Gable started down the slope.

Slow stride.

Hands loose.

Electric arcs coiling around his forearms, bright enough to sting the air.

The Conductor stepped off the train.

Boots hit the ground with a metallic thud that carried through the valley.

He spoke without raising his voice.

“All passengers must board at designated stops. Please clear the line.”

Gable kept walking.

“You’re carrying something that belongs to us.”

The Conductor’s eyes narrowed.

Lightning flickered across his knuckles.

"I won't ask twice."

A surge of amber-white energy snapped between his palms.

Aether surged through the steel beneath him, the entire line glowing in response.

Rain hissed against the heat as it fell onto the tracks.

Gable lifted his chin and smiled once.

“Perfect.”

The Conductor lifted his hand.

Electricity crawled along the rail like living wire, building charge.

Gable braced his stance, aura flaring bright and sharp.

The ridge trembled.

And then both men struck at the same time.
