SYLVANNA — SPECIALIZED RESEARCH FACILITY, HOLDING SHELTER

TRAINING HALL — MORNING

Morning arrived on schedule.

Light rolled in through the upper panels in clean bands, timed to the solar cycle. The shelter woke quietly. Doors slid open.

The training hall sat at the far end of the compound.

Open space. Reinforced floor. Aether-dampening lattice threaded through the walls.

Mae was already dressed.

She stretched at the threshold, rolling her shoulders once, familiar ritual.

Mae always ran first. Always outside. Same loop. Same pace. Same time.

She stepped forward.

A chime sounded.

Soft. Immediate.

A figure detached from the far wall. Facility staff. Neutral colors. Tablet held low.

“Mae,” he said. “Outdoor access is restricted this morning.”

Mae blinked once and tilted her head.

“Say that again.”

He didn’t hesitate. “Outdoor access is restricted during the observation window.”

Mae’s hand went to her face, she rubbed her cheek. “Observation window.”

The other survivors were just making it to the training hall.

Lisa paused mid-step across the room. Aria stopped just before the mat. Colt stopped adjusting his brace.

Mae gestured past him. “I run every morning.”

“Yes,” the man replied. “Inside today.”

Mae took one step closer. “That wasn’t part of the agreement.”

The man nodded. “The parameters were updated overnight.”

Lisa crossed the room slowly. “By who.”

“Joint oversight.”

Colt laughed under his breath. “That’s not an answer.”

The man glanced at his tablet. “This is a temporary adjustment.”

Mae tilted her head. “You said forty-eight hours. Voluntary.”

“Yes.”

“So I’m choosing to go outside,” Mae said. “Right now.”

The man didn’t move.

Another chime sounded behind them.

A second official appeared near the entrance. Same posture. Same tablet. Same calm.

Lisa noticed him instantly.

“You guys prepped for this?” she said.

The first man met her eyes. “We prepared for contingencies.”

Colt pushed off the bench and stood. “Call the dude who was here yesterday.”

The second official spoke this time. “The Director has been briefed.”

Mae didn’t look away. “Then he won’t mind me running.”

Silence stretched.

Kit stood near the wall, arms folded, eyes moving between faces.

“What happens if she walks past you.”

Both officials turned toward him.

The first one smiled politely. “We would strongly advise against that.”

Kit nodded. “Advise how.”

The smile stayed in place.

Aria spoke up, voice steady. “So this isn’t voluntary anymore.”

The second official shook his head. “It remains cooperative.”

Lisa gestured around the room. “Then open the door.”

Neither of them moved.

Mae exhaled through her nose. “That’s the third one.”

Colt glanced at her. “Third what.”

“The third lie,” Mae said. “First the guards. Second was Buck. Now this observation window isn’t feeling so voluntary.”

The first official straightened. “This conversation is drifting outside its purpose.”

Mae stood at the threshold, one hand resting on the doorframe. Her eyes stayed on the morning beyond the glass.

Kit moved.

He stepped past the official and pushed the door open.

Warm air met him. Soil and leaf. Distant water. The garden paths lay quiet under early light.

A chime sounded.

Sharp this time.

“Kit,” the official said.

Kit kept walking.

Mae followed him without breaking stride.

Her foot crossed the threshold. Then the other.

The space shifted.

Voices rose behind them. Tablets lit. Footsteps approached fast, coordinated.

Kit stopped just outside the door.

Mae came to a halt beside him.

They didn’t turn around.

The official’s voice reached them again, tighter now.

“This area is under restricted movement until further notice.”

Kit looked out at the trees.

“Who decided that.”

A pause.

Director Halbert stepped forward from the side corridor. Dark slate robes. Crest pinned high. His presence carried authority.

“I did,” The Director said. “On behalf of all parties.”

Mae finally turned.

“You said forty-eight hours. Voluntary.”

Halbert nodded once. “Circumstances evolved.”

Kit met his eyes.

“That’s too bad.”

Director Halbert studied them.

Behind them, Colt’s brace scraped stone. Lisa’s footsteps joined. Aria came last.

All of them stood at the line now.

The Director raised a hand.

“No one here wants this to escalate.”

Mae smiled once.

“Then don’t escalate it.”

She took off on her jog.

The garden stayed open.

The door stayed open.

Challenge accepted. On both sides.
