SYLVANNA — SPECIALIZED RESEARCH FACILITY, HOLDING SHELTER
COMMON LOUNGE — MORNING
The following morning arrived in rhythm.
The shelter moved into its routine without a missed step. Doors slid open. Footsteps passed. Voices stayed low.
Breakfast waited in the lounge.
Trays set neatly along the counter. Warm bread. Steamed grain. Fruit sliced with care.
Colt, Aria and Lisa were already there.
Kit entered last.
Lisa stood near the counter, pouring herself a drink.
Colt sat at the table, brace extended, working the stiffness out of his ankle with slow patience.
Aria leaned against the window rail, watching the garden paths wake up.
Kit slowed.
He scanned the room once. Then again.
Mae always beat everyone to the lounge. Always claimed the seat closest to the window. Always stretched before she ate, like the day didn’t start until her body agreed.
Kit looked at the empty chair.
“Yo, where’s Mae?”
Lisa paused mid-pour.
Colt glanced up. Aria turned from the glass.
No one answered right away.
Lisa set the cup down carefully. “She didn’t come out yet?”
Kit shook his head. “She was up before me.”
That was true.
Mae had knocked on his door every morning since the ceremony. Just enough to make sure he was awake.
Colt frowned. “That’s weird.”
Aria checked the corridor. “Maybe she’s still in the training hall.”
Kit didn’t move.
Mae wouldn’t have started her workout before greeting everyone.
Footsteps approached.
Two officials entered the lounge together. Same neutral attire. Same measured pace. Tablets held close to the chest.
They stopped just inside the doorway.
“Good morning,” one of them said.
Lisa turned fully. “Where’s Mae.”
The official didn’t blink. “Explorer Mae was reassigned overnight.”
The word landed wrong.
Kit stepped closer to the table. “Reassigned where.”
The second official answered. “Individual observation housing.”
Colt lifted his head slightly. “You moved her.”
The first official nodded once. “As part of an updated assessment.”
No one spoke.
Colt finished chewing. He set his utensil down with care, folded his napkin once, and placed it beside his plate. His voice stayed even.
“Thank you for breakfast,” he said. “We’ll finish eating now.”
The officials exchanged a glance. A brief calculation. Then a nod.
“Of course,” the first replied. “We’ll give you space.”
They stepped back.
The door slid shut.
Footsteps receded down the corridor in clean intervals.
Silence returned to the table.
Lisa lifted her fork again and took a bite, unhurried. Aria followed. Colt resumed eating like the moment had already passed.
Kit watched all of it.
No one questioned the officials today.
No one protested their answers or chased the truth.
Mae’s chair stayed empty.
Kit’s gaze drifted to it once. Just once.
Something tightened behind his ribs.
That feeling again. The one he felt at Depth 17 when he ran into Buck.
The room pressed inward.
The lies lined up one by one in his head.
Guards.
Buck.
Time.
Now Mae.
That was enough.
Lisa stood first, carrying her plate to the return slot. “We should move like normal,” she said. “After all, it is just a normal morning.”
Colt rose after her. “I love normal.”
Aria followed.
Kit stayed seated a second longer.
His hands rested flat on the table. Steady.
He noticed that. The calm surprised him.
He stood and joined them.

After the morning workout, the shelter moved through its usual rhythm.
Survivors dispersed. Doors slid. Light shifted across stone and leaf. The facility kept its careful pace.
Kit walked the outer corridor alone.
He stopped near the edge of the garden overlook.
The door Mae had run through the morning prior stood closed now. Seam sealed clean.
A guard passed at the far end of the walkway. Neutral posture. Neutral face.
Kit waited until the guard disappeared.
Then he placed his hand on the railing.
Aether stirred.
Contained.
It gathered behind his sternum, slow and deliberate, like heat settling into metal.
He breathed once.
The playing field was tilting.
Footsteps approached.
Colt stopped beside him. Didn’t look out. Didn’t look at him.
“Your dad’s not blind,” Colt said quietly. “This entire nation would be ash and rubble before anyone thought about touching you.”
Kit nodded.
“They moved Mae because she set a boundary,” Colt continued. “That tells me she’s still useful to them.”
Kit nodded again.
“And that,” Colt said, turning now, “means they won’t hurt her yet.”
Kit met his eyes.
“Yet,” Colt repeated.
Kit’s demeanor hadn’t changed.
Colt studied him for a long second. “You good, guy?”
Kit answered honestly. “I am.”
Colt accepted that. He clapped Kit once on the shoulder and moved on.
Kit stayed at the railing.
His breathing stayed steady.
He imagined Mae running. The rhythm. The ground under her feet.
He imagined someone stepping into her path.
The heat behind his chest sharpened.
He didn’t let it rise.
It remained where he placed it. His heart.
Midday came without announcement.
Meals rotated. Check-ins passed. The shelter continued its polite surveillance.
No word on Mae.
Lisa gathered them in the common room after the second meal. She closed the door herself this time.
“We wait until sunset,” she said. “Then we ask once.”
Colt nodded. “One voice. One sentence. If we get too worked up again, we get nowhere.”
Aria added, “And if they stall?”
Lisa looked at Kit.
Kit felt every eye turn.
He didn’t flinch.
“We don’t escalate,” Lisa said carefully. “We keep our cool and take the next step.”
Kit spoke for the first time that day.
“They already escalated.”
The room went still.
Kitl took a breath. “We can sit here and play nice all we want.”
“But they took Mae.”
Colt watched him closely now.
Kit met his gaze. “So there’s really only one option.”
”… Bring her back. Alive. Tonight.”
Silence held.
Lisa searched his face.
She found resolve. Settled. Final.
“Okay,” she said. “That’s the line.”
Aria nodded. “That’s the line.”
Colt exhaled through his nose, something like pride flickering through the tension.
“Glad you’re on our team, bud.”
Kit didn’t react to that.
He stood.
“I’m going to walk the perimeter,” he said. “Same loop as yesterday.”
Lisa hesitated. Then motioned with one finger. “Don’t go alone.”
Kit shook his head and offered a genuine smile. His first all day.
“I’m not alone, my dad’s right outside those walls.”
He turned toward the door.
As his hand touched the panel, the heat in the room shifted.
Acceptance.
He had already decided.
Whatever came next, he wasn’t stepping back.
And somewhere in the shelter’s quiet systems, unseen observers marked a change they didn’t yet understand.
The boy hadn’t raised his voice.
He hadn’t threatened anyone.
But something in the world had tilted.
And it wasn’t tilting back.
