SYLVANNA — SPECIALIZED RESEARCH FACILITY, HOLDING SHELTER
COMMON HALL — NIGHT
The doors opened.
Nardoxian armor filled the threshold.
OmiKami units entered in perfect spacing. They moved with the certainty of soldiers who did not expect resistance.
At their center walked General Kofi Asher.
He walked straight to his son.
Kit looked up.
Kofi stopped in front of him and rested a hand on his shoulder. Firm. Familiar.
“Time to go home,” Kofi said quietly.
Kit nodded. His throat tightened.
“Good work” Kofi added.
That was all.
Kofi turned to the group. “Head down the hall,” he said, voice calm. “Give us, five minutes.”
No one argued.
Mae moved first. Then Lisa. Aria followed. Colt rose last, meeting Kit’s eyes before turning away.
Kit stayed where he was.
Kofi squeezed his shoulder once more, then let go.
The survivors exited.
The moment they cleared the doorway, the room changed.
Director Halbert straightened. “General Asher, before you proceed, there are reports that require—”
Vale Thorn raised a hand.
Halbert stopped mid-sentence.
Vale stepped forward, eyes never leaving Kofi.
“The General clearly has something to say,” Vale said. “Let’s hear him.”
Kofi turned fully toward him.
“Vale Thorn,” Kofi said. “You are in violation of the Accord Treaty.”
Silence.
“Overreach of exploration authority,” Kofi continued. “Direct involvement beyond mandate. Unlawful detainment attempt of an expedition member.”
OmiKami units moved immediately.
Two flanked Vale. One secured his wrists. The motion was precise. Practiced.
Vale did not resist.
Kofi stepped closer.
“You will be extradited to Nardox,” he said. “Held pending grand trial for your crimes.”
Vale’s expression remained composed. His eyes moved. Calculating.
Halbert found his voice. “General, this facility operates under—”
Vale didn’t look at him.
The units turned Vale toward the exit.
Kofi didn’t wait.
He led the way.
The procession moved through the facility without pause. Staff pressed against walls. Researchers froze mid-step. Tablets lowered. Conversations died.
The survivors stood in the dining lounge as the doors opened again.
Vale emerged in restraints.
Mae’s breath caught.
Colt went still.
Lisa’s jaw tightened. Aria’s eyes tracked every step.
Kit didn’t move.
They watched Vale pass.
Vale glanced once toward Kit. The look lingered half a second longer than necessary.
Then he was gone.
The doors opened to the outside.
They stepped into the Sylvannan National Research Institute.
Five blocks of glass, stone, and living architecture. Elevated walkways. Research towers woven into canopy structures. Light spilled from upper levels as personnel gathered along rails and terraces.
Everyone saw.
The General of Nardox.
The OmiKami.
The man in restraints.
The High Arbiter waited at the base of the main concourse.
She stood alone.
Her robes caught the ambient light. Her presence carried weight without force.
“Kofi Asher,” she said.
He stopped.
Vale halted beside him.
“This arrest cannot proceed,” the Arbiter said.
Kofi turned to face her.
“Why not,” he said.
She met his eyes. “If you take him, the Accord fractures tonight. The expedition becomes global unrest. The Wilds become ungoverned territory again.”
Kofi held her gaze.
“The world is not prepared,” she continued. “Not yet.”
Silence stretched across the concourse.
Kofi exhaled once.
“Release him,” the Arbiter said.
A long beat passed.
Kofi lifted a hand.
The OmiKami units unlocked Vale’s restraints.
Vale flexed his wrists once. Calm. Collected.
Kofi leaned in close enough that only Vale could hear him.
“One by one, I’ll dismantle it all.” Kofi said.
Vale smiled faintly. “There’s the mighty general.”
Kofi turned away.
He headed back to Kit.
The crowd watched as the balance shifted back into place.
Too clean.
Too quiet.
And beyond the glass and living nation of Sylvanna, the world adjusted to a future it hadn’t chosen.
