NARDOX — WESTERN MILITARY GATE

LATE AFTERNOON

The convoy slowed as it crossed the boundary line.

Stone markers gave way to forged steel pylons etched with Nardoxian script. Heat thickened in the air, familiar and grounding. The colossal newts adjusted their pace instinctively, tails dragging shallow arcs through dust as the military gate opened wide.

Handlers moved in immediately.

They wore the sigils of the Nardoxian military payroll. Calm hands. Confident steps. Each newt was guided away with practiced ease, harnesses unclipped, supply frames lifted clean in coordinated motion. The beasts rumbled low as they were led toward shaded pens and cooling troughs.

Kit slid down from the saddle.

His boots hit the ground and for a moment he just stood there, feeling it.

Home.

The OmiKami dismounted around him.

Armor clinked softly as they straightened. Helmets came off. Dust-streaked faces turned toward him in unison.

No words were spoken.

One by one, they placed a fist to chest and bowed their heads.

A salute.

Not to General Kofi Asher.

To Kit.

The weight of it landed slow. Heavy. Earned.

Kit swallowed and returned it the only way he knew how. He straightened his posture, met their eyes, and smiled. Warm. Humble. Honest.

The warriors broke formation and dispersed toward the barracks without ceremony, laughter already starting to bubble among them as tension finally released.

Military officers converged on Kofi immediately.

Reports were exchanged. Schedules adjusted. Names spoken in low, efficient tones. The posture of command settled back onto him like a mantle he’d set down only briefly.

They moved together through the western military sector.

Here, Nardox showed its bones.

Foundries glowed behind reinforced walls. Training yards rang with steel and footwork. Steam rose from forge vents in steady plumes. Soldiers crossed paths with couriers, engineers, and summoners moving with purpose that didn’t need explanation.

Kit walked beside his father, quiet now.

He felt eyes on him.

People made space without being asked.

He didn’t say anything about it.

Ahead, the Capital city of Sol rose in tiers, terraces catching the lowering light of the twin suns. The Halo Clock towered in the distance, its surface dim for now, waiting for evening.

They passed into the western countryside edge where military infrastructure thinned and civilian life began to bleed back in.

That’s when Kit saw her.

Geni Hua moved along the lower road, rope-thread braids catching the sun. She walked with a calm purpose. Loose. Confident. Like the street belonged to her.

Kit slowed without meaning to.

Kofi noticed immediately.

His conversation paused.

Kit blinked. “Dad—do you need me for anything?”

Kofi followed his gaze for a beat, then smiled faintly.

“You’re home,” he said. “Be home. Just make it back before the Clock sings.”

Kit nodded.

He peeled off from the group, heart picking up pace as he adjusted his path to follow the lower terraces.

Behind him, Kofi turned back toward duty.

The officers redirected toward the Chamber of Suns. Imani would be waiting there. The work he’d postponed all the way from Sylvanna was already calling him back.

Two paths diverged.

Both necessary.

Kit descended into the lower terraces of Sol.

The air grew thicker with spice smoke and forge heat. Markets spilled into stone walkways. Vendors shouted prices. Children darted between legs carrying practice blades too big for them. Martial studios stood open to the street, instructors correcting stances with quick taps and quieter words.

Geni wove through it all easily.

Kit followed at a distance, pretending to browse, pretending to look anywhere but at her. Every time he thought about calling her name, his throat tightened.

What would he even say?

Hey, remember me?

Hey, I ran from trouble when my Uncle needed help.

Hey, I’m back and I don’t know why seeing you makes my chest feel like fire.

He waited for the perfect moment.

It never came.

Geni turned down a side avenue and slowed.

Kit picked up his pace just enough to keep her in sight.

She stopped.

Not alone.

A small group waited for her near a shaded wall where training banners hung folded.

Kit slowed to a halt.

His courage arrived one step too late.

He stayed where he was, heart loud in his ears, watching as she joined them.

The city moved around him, unaware.

And above it all, the Halo Clock continued its slow count toward sunset.
