A Saint on the Horizon - AxA Chapter 3

NARDOX, THE CAPITAL CITY OF SOL

The heat never leaves Nardox.
Even after sunset, the capital glows, streets pulsing with the amber light of the solar-aether grid that drinks from the twin suns by day and exhales it as warmth at night. From above, Sol looks alive, lines of orange energy threading through marble terraces and domes gleaming like cooled gold.

At the city’s heart towers the Halo Clock, a monument older than memory. Its circular face burns soft orange, powered entirely by stored sunlight. It has ticked through every war, dynasty, and prayer. Each chime is the heartbeat of a nation that learned to live beside the fire instead of beneath it.

THE TERRACES — EVENING

A soft breeze carries heat up the carved steps where Kit Asher, Kariah Asher, Ren Varek, Taro Dane, and Mina Sorrell walk shoulder to shoulder through the golden haze. Their uniforms hang loose and scorched from the day’s matches, but their spirits aren’t quiet.

From the terraces, the lights of Sol stretch outward, a city alive beneath twin moons, one silver and one red. Music rises from courtyards. Far below, monks of the Omikami order chant their evening verse, voices rising and falling in slow waves.

Taro kicks a pebble down a step.
“Next year we’re qualifying for the World Crownfall Cup.”

Ren groans, though he’s smiling.
“We never even made it out of trials. Got crushed earlier.”

Kariah folds her arms.
“Speak for yourself. Team Heart didn’t break. We just ran out of time.”

“Still lost,” Ren mutters.

Kit’s voice cuts in, calm and dry.
“Maybe we’ll practice winning next time.”

That gets a laugh out of everyone.

Mina flicks a braid aside.
“Look. That’ll be our stage when the world watches.”

They stop at a balcony overlooking the Sol’Rahna Arena, the largest structure in Nardox. Half stadium, half temple. Its reflective panels hold the last of the suns’ light, glowing faint orange under the moons.

Kariah leans on the rail.

“Imagine standing on that floor during finals. All seven nations watching. The suns overhead.”

Ren exhales.

“Home-turf advantage.”

Taro smirks.

“If we ever get there.”

Kit says nothing. The arena’s glow reflects in his eyes.

“We will. Nardox deserves to be seen again.”

Mina nods quietly.

The Halo Clock chimes once, a low tone rolling across the terraces.

Crowds gather on rooftops and bridges, faces lifting. Each chime pulls voices down. Kids quiet. Elders hum along. Nardox remembers who it is.

Ren glances around.
“The city’s brighter tonight. The Halo’s Haloing.”

Kariah nods.

Mina laughs. “It always is when we’re together.”

Ren groans. “You’re disgusting.”

Taro squints toward the distant clock face.
“Hey, isn’t it time?”

Kariah doesn’t answer, but Kit feels it too. The air thickens. Aether tightens. The kind of moment before a storm or a prayer.

Above them the Halo Clock ticks, its amber glow spilling across Sol’s terraces like liquid gold. For a moment the world feels aligned.
