ASHES X AETHER
CHAPTER 4 — THE x RETURN x OF x THE x SAINT
NARDOX — THE CAPITAL CITY OF SOL
After midnight, crowds line the Path of Suns barefoot, candles in hand. Rose-petal flames burn without smoke, lighting the terraces in soft gold.
Kyro walks through them.
His black cloak shifts with the heat. At his waist rests the Relic of the Saint, a black dragonbone-alloy body carved with gold filigree, a solar-tempered glass pommel glowing like a faint ember. It hangs there like a dormant creature waiting for breath.
He does not wave or speak.
Still, every person bows their head as he moves past.
When Kyro steps fully into Sol, the Halo Clock rings once. Every light in the capital lowers for a heartbeat, a quiet bow.
THE PATH OF SUNS — LATE NIGHT
Kyro continues toward the inner terraces. The pavement’s solar forges shimmer under him as though following his steps. Above, the moons hang balanced, one silver and one red.
A column of Omikami guards kneel as he approaches, armor catching red and white reflections. Their commander bows.
“Saint of—”
“Don’t.”
His tone is calm and final.
She straightens, meets his eyes, and smiles.
“Welcome home, Kyro.”
Kyro nods once.
THE ASHER HOME — LATER THAT NIGHT
Past plazas and chanting crowds, Sol quiets into its residential terraces. Narrow lanes glow with aether lamps. Houses of pale stone and orange glass line the path.
Kyro stops at the Asher estate, marked by a carved sun sigil and a wind chime swaying in the heat.
The gate slides open.
Imani stands in the doorway, tall and sharp-postured, braid loose, her expression somewhere between irritation and relief.
“We were all so thrilled to be up with the moons waiting for your return.”
Kyro smiles. “Thought I’d miss the royal entrance this late.”
“You mean you didn’t want a parade?” she teases.
“Parades make me nervous,” he says, rubbing the back of his neck.
She laughs. “Then come in before you start one here.”
Inside, cedar and fruit tea linger in the air. Aether conduits hum softly beneath the floor.
The Asher family waits around a low brazier: Kofi, Sobrina, and their children, Kariah, Kit, Lyra, Seris, and little Kilo.
For a moment no one moves. Even the Halo seems to quiet.
Kofi stands with his uniform half undone from command duties. He and Kyro meet in the center of the room, silence saying everything.
Kyro lets out a quiet laugh. “Still carrying the whole army on your back, huh?”
Kofi grins. “Only till you take your share again.”
They clasp hands and pull into a short embrace.
“Good to see you, brother.”
“Good to be seen.”
Sobrina steps forward, warm and grounding. She touches Kyro’s cheek.
“You look tired.”
“It’s demanding work, being this good looking while carrying the family name,” Kyro says.
She laughs and pinches his arm.
“Dinner’s cold, but you still have a chair.”
Kyro bows slightly. “Long as Lyra didn’t cook, what else could a man ask for?”
Laughter breaks across the room.
FAMILY LIGHT
Around the brazier, the home warms again.
Kariah teases Kit for standing too stiff.
Lyra pretends she isn’t staring from behind her book.
Seris whispers about the Relic until Sobrina hushes her.
Kilo steps forward with a wooden sword gripped in both hands.
Kyro kneels. “What’s this? Planning to duel your old uncle?”
Kilo nods. “I’ve been training.”
Kyro studies the toy sword. “Looks strong enough to split the suns.”
The boy frowns. “Yeah, but it’s just a wooden sword.”
Kyro smiles. “Then you’re already stronger than most men I’ve met. They don’t know the difference.”
Laughter fills the home. Even Kofi’s restraint breaks.
FIRES OF HOME
Later, the house grows quiet.
Kyro sits on the balcony, the Relic resting beside him, its alloy catching the city’s glow. Sol hums beneath the twin moons. The Halo Clock turns in the distance.
Kofi joins him, leaning on the railing.
For a while neither speaks.
“It’s different,” Kyro says. “The city.”
Kofi nods. “We made peace with our place in the world. People are happy. It’s a rare time.”
His voice lowers.
“The world’s quieter, but it isn’t calmer. You can feel it.”
Kyro watches the red and silver light. “Yeah. I can feel it.”
THE LESSON
Kit steps quietly onto the balcony beside him. Their faces glow amber in the city light.
They stand in silence until Kyro speaks.
“Funny thing about admiration. People forget it’s just intolerance that learned patience.”
Kit looks up. “You mean how everyone treats you?”
Kyro shakes his head. “Guess I did.”
The Halo Clock chimes again, the sound rolling through the city.
Kyro looks at Kit, not the boy he left but the one the world will test soon.
“You’ve got questions. Don’t rush the answers.”
Kit nods. “Knowing no one’s coming to give you water, and choosing to burn anyway.”
Kyro smiles. “Yeah. That’s real fire.”
The Halo turns. Twin moons above. Twin suns waiting below the horizon.
For the first time in years, the Asher home feels full again — warm, alive, and lit from within.
