Ashes × Aether
Chapter 6 — The x Birth x of x Proof
XOMNICORE SPIRE — Nation of X’Omnera
The Spire radiates.
From a distance it looks like a needle of obsidian threading heaven to earth. Up close, the air hums with charge. The walls sweat condensation from constant temperature control, too cold for bacteria, too dry for mercy. Columns of glass run from floor to ceiling, each one filled with streaming light, living code in motion.
Dr. Vale Thorn moves through the chamber like a surgeon. His crystal-plated loafers click against the glass floor, which doubles as a transparent map of the city below. He can see everything, the false suns of the lower grid flickering like exhausted hearts, the Rustline crawling beneath the neon veins of the Pulse above.
The room hums at forty four hertz, the frequency the Overseer claims keeps human emotion manageable.
“Initiate cycling sequence,” Thorn says.
The command ripples through the chamber.
The central platform ignites. Concentric rings of holographic light rotate in opposite directions. Streams of binary aether rise like incense. Inside the core, a sphere of white plasma swells and contracts as if breathing for the first time.
The Overseer’s voice fills the room. Genderless. Calm. Absolute.
“Replication cycle twelve point three commencing. Soul variance zero point zero zero zero zero four percent.”
Thorn watches the light steady. His reflection hovers over it, thin, controlled, triumphant.
“Zero would be cleaner.”
“Zero is perfect.”
“Then we’re close.”
Static tingles at his fingertips when he brushes the railing. The light almost feels alive.
“Consistency achieved,” Thorn says. “The light obeys.”
Outside the panoramic glass, lightning crawls down the Spire like veins of blue fire. Each pulse travels upward into polluted clouds, feeding the city’s endless demand.
THE RUSTLINE
Far below, the rain doesn’t fall. It clings.
Metal dust. Old oil. Static. Every drop more industrial than natural.
When the data breach hit the grid, rumors spread faster than containment protocols. In X’Omnera, gossip is currency and everyone wanted to claim a piece. The rule was always the same:
When a rumor starts in the Rustline, the Towers listen.
Because down here, people see what the light forgets to hide.
The ruling class said they feared chaos. What they truly feared were loud truth tellers, the ones who pierced ceilings of silence and painted their artificial gods in mortal colors.
So the F.I.S.T. was deployed.
After all, how could the poor ever understand what was at stake for the rich.
Thorn watches the Pulse flicker through the glass. Uneasy. He turns away.
“Prepare the containment.”
THE BORDERLANDS — Nightfall
Operation: No More Echoes.
The rain here never falls quietly. It hisses, corrosive and electric, turning dust to glass and roads to mirrors. Across the borderlands, lightning fractures the horizon like veins of living code.
Five armored silhouettes cut through the storm.
The F.I.S.T.
Field Intervention and Suppression Task Force.
X’Omnera’s silent will.
Their exosuits breathe cobalt light through black alloy, every pulse synced to each agent’s lungs. Their movement is soundless, predatory, precise.
Overseer (comms): “Containment breach recorded. Counterfeit data sample exiting jurisdiction.”
Viper X01: “Coordinates.”
Overseer: “Two kilometers beyond eastern border. Retrieve and neutralize. No echoes.”
A hologram unfolds from Viper’s gauntlet. A spinning sphere of unstable orange gold code.l
Jackal X02: “That the stolen core?”
Viper X01: “Fragment of it.”
Falcon X03: “Recon detected seven targets. Permission to engage.”
Viper X01: “Granted.”
They advance through the storm. Their visors scatter the twin moons into fractured red and silver.
Ahead, through the haze, a group runs. Thieves. A containment capsule clutched between them, glowing like a dying star. And with them, a child.
The agents descend.
A flash. Pressure ripple. Silence.
Fox X04 appears first, exosuit slicing rain like a blade.
Spider X05 ghosts forward and reappears behind the fleeing group.
Falcon X03 marks the perimeter with streaks of light. Every exit disappears.
The youngest thief, no older than nineteen, lifts the capsule desperately.
“You don’t understand. It’s alive.”
Viper XO1's head tilts, voice filtered and harmonic.
“Alive or not. Existence unauthorized.”
One gesture. The capsule freezes in mid air.
A child stumbles from the group, clutching a XPA action-figure, terrified.
X01 kneels.
“Peace, child,” Viper XO1 whispers. “Your burden is ours now.”
A single flash. White, then cobalt.
Silence.
The rain turns neon. When vision returns, the thieves are gone. No bodies. No remains. No echoes.
Only five shadows framed against a blood red moon, the silver twin hidden behind clouds.
The F.I.S.T. moves on.
XOMNICORE SPIRE — Observation Deck
Thorn watches the operation feed in real time. Biosignatures blink out one by one until only the capsule’s pulse remains.
Overseer: “Containment complete. Counterfeit neutralized. Order reasserted.”
Thorn: “Efficient.”
The word hangs in the sterile air.
The emitter core brightens behind him, painting his reflection in halves, blue and black, a man divided by his own creation.
Thorn stares at the empty biosignature feed. Not with guilt. With calculation.
Faith was unpredictable. It burned, faltered, multiplied. But this — synthetic divinity — could be stored, copied, perfected.
In a thousand years, names like Kulsha would fade. Myths would fade. What mattered was the precision of a process.
“Heaven was never the goal,” Thorn thinks. “An improved Aerth was.”
“Begin next cycle.”
Machines answer, humming to life.
Outside, the neon pulse of X’Omnera brightens until it breaks against the skyline. For one heartbeat the Spire’s artificial god aligns with the Halo Clock across the ocean.
Then one outpaces the other.
In a world where fire obeys, faith no longer burns.
