Ashes × Aether
Chapter 7 — Breathe Between Sparks
THE TRAINING COURTYARD — OUTSIDE THE CAPITAL OF SOL, NARDOX
Evening lays a soft amber over the courtyard. The twin suns sink behind the rooftops, turning white stone to warm gold. Heat rises in slow waves. Somewhere close, little Kilo laughs and chases shadows with a wooden sword, narrating victories with his imagination.
Kyro’s white linen robes ripple faintly in the heat. No insignia, no rank, no claim to holiness — just a man who’s learned how to exist without wasting energy.
At his hip, the Relic of the Saint rests on a magnetic clip. A sleek black and gold conduit forged from holy steel and dragonbone alloy, its glass core swirling with a faint, dormant ember. When active, it detaches and hovers, not as a weapon but as an anchor, harmonizing the aether fields like a musician tuning a string.
Now it floats quietly between him and the twins, its sphere pulsing with a small, steady light. It doesn’t perform. It stabilizes.
Kit and Kariah face each other barefoot on the dusted tiles. Sweat beads along their arms. The ground around them remembers earlier drills in faint scorched circles.
“Again,” Kyro says.
Kit draws breath. His chest rises too fast. Aether sparks at his palm, bright and a little too eager. Kariah answers with a low arc of golden light. Her rhythm is clean, every exhale a line she intends. Their fields meet, press, then buckle. Heat snaps through the air. The Relic hums deeper and the surge settles.
Kyro steps in. Not to stop them, but to adjust what they don’t see. He turns Kit’s wrist a degree inward, lowers Kariah’s shoulder, taps Kit’s heel so his weight holds center.
“People think mastery is what you add,” he says. “Most often, it’s what you remove.”
He nods at Kit’s chest. “You breathe like you’re trying to convince the world you’re ready. The world doesn’t care. Your breath is for you.”
He gestures toward Kariah’s stance. “You protect first. Good instinct. But protection without direction is a house with every door open. Decide which door you’ll guard, then move.”
They reset. The light between them comes gentler this time. Kit’s flare holds a shape before fraying. Kariah’s arc bends exactly where she intends, then fades by choice. The Relic only witnesses.
KYRO’S LESSON
Kyro draws his thumb across his forearm, leaving a thin line in the dust.
“Three things you can control when everything else refuses,” he says. “Your breath. Your balance. Your boundaries.”
He speaks like he always has, at every kitchen table dinner, every long walk home. Not as an instructor, but as family giving real game.
“Breath isn’t mystic. It’s a metronome. When it’s steady, your body gets the message that you’re safe, and you can be precise. When it’s wild, your aether tries to help by getting bigger. Bigger isn’t better. Bigger gets sloppy.”
He looks between them, then at the horizon.
“Balance is the bill you pay for every choice. If your mind sprints, your body pays interest. If your body overreaches, your focus goes broke. Split the cost evenly.”
He traces a small circle with his heel.
“And boundary is simple. Where do you end, and where does the world begin. Draw that line on purpose, or the world will draw it for you.”
He doesn’t wait for answers.
“Again.”
Kit breathes quietly. The flare that answers is smaller, denser, a thought held instead of a shout. Kariah’s light lifts with it, two currents meeting without collision, touching and releasing. The Relic’s pulse follows their rhythm, then settles back into Kyro’s.
He steps between them, palms open. No show of power. Just example. Aether gathers, not as fire but as warm agreement in the air. He closes his hands. The warmth disappears.
“For most people, power is a season. It comes when they’re angry or afraid or praised. You two don’t get that luxury. You’ll need yours when you’re tired, misunderstood, or alone.”
He turns to leave. Pauses. Sets down a question that doesn’t want an answer out loud.
“When there’s no one left to guide your breath,” Kyro asks softly, “what keeps it steady.”
Silence holds. The Relic floats in that hush. Kyro reaches out and takes it from the air. It clicks into place at his belt. He walks away without looking back.
KIT:
He doesn’t move for a while. The air cools across his skin. The dust line beneath him feels like a fault and a promise.
What keeps it steady.
He thinks of every time someone named him before he could. Prodigy. Heir. Trouble. Flame. He doesn’t hate them. He hates how easy it is to perform any of those names and call it identity.
Kit looks at his hands. They’re still. Aether doesn’t answer because it doesn’t need to.
He doesn’t know who he is yet. He only knows he wants to be the one who decides. Maybe that’s the first honest thing he’s felt in a long time.
Breath in. Breath out. The space between belongs to him.
KARIAH:
Her pulse is calm. The light at her fingers warms and goes quiet like a candle she cups instead of smothers.
What keeps it steady.
She has an answer she doesn’t speak. Who I am does. She wants to mend, shield, and lift, and she wants the strength to make those things final. Kindness without power is only hope. She intends to be a fact.
Kariah glances at her brother. No pity. Just a nod, the kind that says I saw what you did right.
She breathes deeper. A small shape of golden white forms before dissolving, a heart written in light for no one but her.
Kilo’s wooden sword thumps the stone somewhere past the arch. “Got you,” he shouts at whatever giant only he can see.
The twin suns drop lower. Sol glows in the distance like the inside of a kept promise.
For a moment the courtyard holds all their answers without forcing them out.
Two young summoners learning to listen, and the quiet man who taught them where to put their breath.
