The Crownfall Trials & The Flame of Tomorrow - AxA Chapter 8

⟢───── Ashes × Aether ─────⟣

THE SOL’RAHN ARENA — CAPITAL CITY OF SOL, NARDOX

The twin suns sit high above the capital, turning the arena floor into a field of molten gold. Forty thousand voices rise with the heat, their shouts rolling across tiered stone. Drums pound from the upper decks, each strike matching the rhythm of a forge.

Crimson banners for Sol’Rahn Academy: The Heat hang across one half of the stands. Ivory banners for Omika Institute: The Vanguards hang across the other.

Today is different.
Today decides which school earns a chance to represent Nardox on the world stage.

The Crownfall Ascension Trials.

Two schools. Ten summoners. One seat in the Ascension World Cup.

The stakes do not get higher in this sport.

ANNOUNCER (V.O.)

“Two schools. Ten summoners. One path to Ascension!”

Sigil lines ignite across the floor. The stone shifts from plain tile to glowing circuitry, three lanes stretching from gate to gate. Top. Mid. Combo.
Referees back away as Aether thickens around them.

THE OPENING RITUAL

Both teams bow with palms forward. A low hum rolls through the crowd as thousands sync their breathing, a national tradition during the Trials.

The first rotation begins.

Combo-Lane activates. Two Shaper-class summoners step forward, hands steady, breath controlled. Their light bends into form, red geometry rising from one sigil while white-gold rises from the other.

ANNOUNCER

“Moro of Sol’Rahn and Kei of Omika. Begin.”

THE MATCH

Moro moves first.
A spinning ring of runes forms beneath his boots. It erupts with a pack of Emberwolves, flame fused to stone, each one leaving claw marks of molten heat across the tiles as they sprint forward.

The arena shakes with cheers.

Across from him, Kei exhales once.
His sigil unfolds into a mandala of white-gold lines. Light condenses into a colossal radiant hand that drops from above like a falling star.

Impact.
Flame and dust burst upward.
The Emberwolves dissolve into sparks.

Both sigils burn out.
The first exchange ends even.

TEAM HEART IN THE STANDS

Ren leans forward.
“Clean trade. They’re buying time until those sigils refresh.”

Mina grins.
“This is why Combo is my favorite. It’s chess.”

Kit stays quiet. He watches the footwork, the timing, the breath patterns. Reading the game inside the game.

THE JUNGLE

A shimmer moves between branches.
Then another.

Fora Omika appears, refracting through the air like a shard of living glass. Youngest prodigy of her school. Already rumored to become the next Matriarch of Light.

She blinks from the jungle to the lane’s flank in one heartbeat.

Her embodiment sigil flashes.
She channels velocity through her palm and strikes.

The impact sends Moro flying across the lane. Aether blasts out under him in a sunburst as he skids to a stop.

The stadium explodes with noise.

ANNOUNCER (V.O.)

“Fora breaks through Combo-Lane. First contact to The Vanguards!”

Fora’s breathing stays controlled.
She disappears again into refracted light.

BACK IN THE STANDS

Kilo jumps from his seat.

“She folded him like paper! What a rotation!”

Mina tugs at him and jokes.

"You don't even know what that means! But you're right"

Ren nods.
“Vanguards are heating up. Fora's diffy.”

Kariah studies the field.
“She literally doesn’t waste motion. Every move has intention.”

Taro nudges her.
“You sound like Kyro.”

Their laughter blends with the crowd.
Even Kit gives the smallest smirk.

Below, both teams regroup.
Summons refresh.
The lanes ignite again.

The match will end when all three lanes shift under one team long enough to fracture the Crown Relic — the hovering prism of light above the arena.

Right now, it comes down to mid.

CLOSING MINUTES

The Heat play their card.

Aera Vale, their Conduit summoner, steps forward. Her sigils form a barrier of bending glass fire that redirects incoming energy and stabilizes wounded lanes.

It buys Moro precious seconds.

Across the field, Fora appears again.

Her fingertips trace the Omikami sigil of Dawn Pierce.
Light threads into a javelin, bright and clean.

Kit’s voice drops.
“She’s about to close it.”

Fora hurls.

The javelin pierces Top Lane in a streak.
Durk — The Heat’s strongest laner, a near-pro — is caught off guard. His sigils collapse. His summons vanish.

All three lanes flash ivory.

ANNOUNCER (V.O.)

“Victory for Omika Institute!”

AFTERMATH

Confetti erupts across the stands.
Music pulses.
The scoreboard displays:
VANGUARDS ADVANCE — ASCENSION TRIAL ROUND TWO

Kilo keeps waving a crimson flag anyway. No one stops him.

Kariah watches the winners bow beneath the settling dust. The pride in her eyes hasn’t dimmed.

Kit watches Fora step off the field. No envy in him, just inspiration.

A boy who wants to hear his nation cheering his name too and now he knows exactly what he needs to work on.

Kariah takes Kilo’s hand as they exit the stands.
Wind pushes through banners above them.

Twin suns drift toward the horizon, casting red and gold across Kit’s eyes.

The crowd leaves unaware that the last true bearer to Nardox’s fire wasn’t on the field today.
