THE WILDS — DEPTH ONE
The first sound is a hum.
Low. Distant. Alive.
From above, the land stretches without end, a scar of green and gold dissolving into mist. Wind moves across it like slow current, bending the light until the air shimmers. Twin suns bleed across a bruised horizon, turning shadows into heat-colored shapes.
This is Depth One.
The border where man ends and the Wilds begin.
Each gust carries flecks of Aether drifting like visible breath. Hills flatten into plains, plains rise into forests, forests fade into haze. Crumbling towers lean half-swallowed by the soil, their markings erased by time. Metal roots coil through earth that faintly glows from within.
Beyond the walls of man lies a world that remembers.
The Wilds, a remnant of the age before nations.
Farther in, the light shifts.
DEPTH FIVE
Depth Five is where rhythm breaks.
Color stops behaving.
Green turns to gold, gold to gray, gray to pulse.
A drop of water falls upward, pauses, then gravity claims it again.
The Wilds are not quiet. It is paying attention.
Breathing becomes intentional. Every inhale feels inspected. Early explorers wrote that their bodies felt like instruments, and the Aether chose which ones stayed in tune.
On the bank of a dry river, a skeleton gleams like crystal. Not white, but translucent. Beside it lies a weapon half-buried in stone, resonating with something like memory.
Those who lose balance here do not burn.
They do not rot.
They fold inward, quietly and completely.
The Wilds does not kill out of vengeance.
It kills to understand.
DEPTH TEN
Time loosens its grip.
A distant ridge moves against the clouds, not from wind but from something massive shifting. Fog pushes from caverns like breath. The ground trembles as if something beneath it turns in its sleep.
Explorers once called these creatures Guardians or Keepers, though no one remembers what they guard. They are shapes molded by ancient Aether, long outliving their purpose.
They do not rule the Wilds.
They are the Wilds.
Thunder cracks through a storm that hasn’t cleared in a century. Lightning flashes green, raw Aether striking itself. Through the brightness, small radiant creatures sprint across the rain, shapes half-beast and half-light.
There is no center here.
Only descent.
THE NATIONS PREPARE
Across Aerth, the world begins to move.
In Vharon, bullet trains cut through glass plains, carrying engineers and Royal Guards toward the frontier.
In Sylvanna, emerald ore is packed into moss-lined crates that vibrate as if aware of what waits ahead.
In Nardox, the forges never cool. Sparks drift from open doors and cling to the clothes of two unnamed summoners watching in silence.
Thirty souls will soon walk where maps end.
Fifteen Royal Guards of Vharon.
Eight geologists from Sylvanna.
Two from Nardox, unnamed but not unknown.
Five shadows from X’Omnera.
The memory of the summit lingers in every breath of planning.
“To ensure research integrity and national safety,” the envoy had said, “we deploy five specialists.”
“You haven’t named them.”
“Their names aren’t required.”
Static fractured the projection, revealing five silhouettes with faint blue visors. When the image cleared, no one continued the argument. The decision had already been accepted.
The world called it discovery.
But discovery wasn’t the truth.
DEPTH SEVENTEEN
There is no horizon.
Only time bending in stillness.
The hum returns, deeper now, constant.
The ground breaks away into a chasm of shifting emerald and black. Aether churns like something unsettled. Heat rises in slow breaths that test the air.
Something enormous stirs in the dark.
Above it, the last flare of the twin suns collapses behind cloud, leaving only the pulse of Aether beneath the earth.
