THE WILDS — DEPTH 7, ENTERING DEPTH 8
Night had no edge here.
It didn’t fall.
It thickened until you were simply inside it.
The exploration team’s camp sat between shifting rock and breathing fog, the last steady ground before Depth 8. The air pulsed with static and heat, every exhale of the land carrying something faint and deliberate.
Two weeks into descent, the team had learned the rhythm of exhaustion.
The quiet between orders.
The unspoken count of missing names.
Tools hummed around the perimeter. Sensors blinked in lazy, uncertain intervals.
Kyro sat near the fire with the Relic of the Saint resting across his knees. He dragged a cloth along its surface in slow, precise strokes. The obsidian-emerald conduit swallowed more light than it returned. Kit sat nearby, visor off, eyes fixed on the flames. The rest of the team murmured over ration tins with no appetite at all.
Then Kit’s head turned.
Movement.
Not footsteps.
Something more deliberate.
Shapes formed in the fog. Five of them. Outlined in cold blue light.
The team went still.
The air tightened, as if the Wilds were listening.
The shapes drew closer. Long strides, perfectly timed, no wasted motion.
When they reached the edge of the torchlight, the fog peeled back.
The Fist.
Their exo-suits absorbed the color around them, blue tracer lines pulsing across their limbs like veins. Each carried a different weapon: daggers, rifle, longblade, throwing knives. Every stance was balanced. Predatory.
Kyro did not rise.
He simply lifted his gaze.
The lead unit stepped forward and lowered her hood. Her visor dimmed until half her face showed. Half shadow, half reflection.
X01. Viper.
No one spoke. Even the fog seemed to hesitate.
Her eyes moved across the circle of tired soldiers before settling on Kyro.
“Saint of Fire,” she said. Her voice was cool, almost mechanical at first, but beneath it lived memory. “It’s been a long time.”
Kyro did not answer. His hand froze on the Relic.
Viper’s gaze dropped to the conduit, then back to him. The emerald alloy caught the flame just enough to glow. For a moment, she smelled melted glass again.
“Still carrying it. Still cleaning it. Like penance.”
Kit looked between them, confused.
“You two—”
Viper cut him off.
“We met in Antoca.”
The fire cracked. The Wilds hummed a little louder.
She didn’t need to explain the name. Everyone knew the ruins that word belonged to. A city turned to ash. But she explained anyway. Her voice stayed level, factual.
“The Antoca breach wasn’t an accident. The Saint’s restraint failed because the doors were forced open. X’Omnera called for containment. You called for evasion.”
She crouched near the fire. Blue light rippled across her armor.
“I remember the heat first. Steel bending. Then people running. And the Saint of Fire walking through it like judgment.”
Her tone never shifted. This wasn’t accusation.
It was documentation.
“You burned the whole district to stop the chain reaction. To save yourself. You erased a city.”
Kit’s throat tightened.
Whispers he had heard before suddenly felt small compared to a witness standing in front of him.
Viper’s visor pulsed with each breath.
“You were the first to show what a Saint becomes when they want to live more than they want to save.”
The fire popped. Sparks drifted upward and vanished.
Kyro stayed still.
He didn’t blink.
Didn’t argue.
Viper rose, her eyes still on him.
“The Fist never forgot Antoca,” she said. “We were built from it. Swore our oath to bring the Saint of Fire to justice.”
The other four agents remained silent behind her, visors faintly glowing in the fog.
The camp didn’t move.
Even the Wilds went quiet.
Kit tried again.
“Unc—”
He stopped when Kyro finally looked up.
His face was calm.
Unreadable.
Carved from discipline.
He set the Relic beside him and allowed himself the smallest grin.
“Foolish dedication.”
Nothing followed. No justification.
Just those two words hanging over the fire like a verdict.
