Kits 'First' Steps - AxA Chapter 17

THE WILDS — DEPTH 9 MIDDAY

The aether in the air was heavier here warped by pressure and light.

Dark fog poured through fractures in the rock. The exploration team spread across the ridge, scanning formations, mapping terrain, collecting samples that pulsed faintly in their gloves.

Research drones hovered overhead, silent silver multi-rotor technology, their lights cutting ribbons through the haze. The sound of drilling and quiet data chatter echoed between the wind.

From behind the survey line came Kyro’s voice low, calm, carrying through static.

“Again.”

Kit steadied his breath, heel digging into the dust. He pushed forward.

A burst of flame flashed beneath his step too hot, too fast. It skidded across the ground in a brief arc before collapsing into sparks.

The earth hissed, leaving a faint line of molten glass.

His first Ignition Step.

Rough, uneven but movement born of fire all the same.

Kyro watched from the edge of the ridge, arms folded, the reflection of the Relic flickering in his eyes.

“We’ll finish this later.”

He turned toward the rest of the team.

“Pack it up. We move before the day turns.”

Guards sealed containers, some scientists powered down scanners while others used drones to survey ahead.

The remaining team members fell back into formation, the hum of their equipment fading under the pulse of the Wilds. As they marched, their footprints glowed faintly behind them brief trails of cyan swallowed by green.

SYLVANNA — THE HIGH OUTERLANDS

As the twin suns set upon the jungle canopy, a low fog glowing in hues of silver and gold. Rope bridges swayed between ancient trees, drumming softly with the wind.

Far above, Set stood at a ridge overlooking the valley. His eyes reflected the moonlight; faint threads of his violet Aether curled from his palms, dissipating into the evening air like smoke.

Below, the Panteran tribes moved through ritual—chanting, striking sigils into stone, hammering rhythm into the jungle’s heartbeat. The world beneath him breathed, unaware that its heir was already becoming something new.

Set raised his hands once more. The violet-black glow pulsed—stronger this time—before fading again. He exhaled, and the forest answered in stillness.

NARDOX — HAVEN CITY

The heat of late afternoon pressed over Haven’s markets, thick with spice, steel, and sunlight.

Soros walked with Rob, Imani’s trusted advisor, through rows of banners and construction crews prepping the plaza for the Sun Festival—Nardox’s oldest tradition, revived for the first time since the Accord.

Wooden stages rose like new temples. Blacksmiths shaped brass lanterns into flares; children chased ribbons through the smoke.

“Logistics are on track,” Rob said, glancing over his slate. “But the entertainment roster’s thin. Too many performers left for the colonies.”

Soros smiled faintly, wiping his brow.

“Then we give the young ones their stage. Let them remind us what light looks like when it’s earned.”

Kariah arrived moments later, tablet under her arm, hair pinned back against the heat. She skimmed through the roster—names of dancers, musicians, pyromancers—and circled one.

“This one,” she said. “They’re local. They play with a whole band—sound that carries flame through vibration.”

Rob nodded approval, jotting it down. Soros chuckled.

“You’ve got an eye for spark,” he said.

Kariah smiled back.

“I’m learning from the best.”

The sound of hammers and laughter carried over the rooftops, the pulse of a city remembering joy.

THE WILDS — DEPTH 9, NIGHT

By nightfall, fog rolled in thicker than before.

Kyro led from the front, Kit just behind, the team’s lights cutting through the emerald dark. In the distance, faint blue reflections flickered between the rocks—The Fist, still following, silent as breath.

No one spoke. The Wilds had its own rhythm now—something between wind and pulse.

They moved deeper, guided by the fading glow of their own footsteps.
